This past Monday, the WNBA had their annual draft and this league is growing. We have some bright young stars coming to take over the league and I think every year is going to be more and more exciting. We’re going to get into a 2025 Draft Recap today.
Last year’s draft class of Caitlin Clark, Cameron Brink and Angel Reese shook the league. This year, names like Paige Bueckers, Dominque Malonga and Hailey Van Lith were among the names called. We should have another big year of growth in the WNBA with these ladies joining.
I’m going to touch on 2 of those names above more in depth and a 3rd that I feel is going to have a huge impact on the league. The league will have a different look to it this year after a busy offseason. Start of the season is Friday May 16th and I cannot wait. Let’s get into some of these new faces.
Dallas Wings select Paige Bueckers with the #1 pick in the 2025 Draft

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Englbert with the #1 pick Paige Bueckers.
The highly anticipated guard went 1st overall as expected. Bueckers comes into the draft just weeks after winning the National Championship with the University of Connecticut. She averaged 20 ppg, 4.7 rpg and 4.6 apg with a 53.1% shooting percentage.
Dallas will be welcoming her with open arms, but to a new look team. Arike Ogunbowale will still lead this team at guard. Adding Bueckers make this back court extremely dangerous now. The Wings also added DiJonai Carrington from the Sun and Nalyssa Smith from the Fever. Center Teaira McCowan returns to handle the rock down low.
This team was extremely disappointing last year. They have parted ways with Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard, who were both big parts of this team. They will be missed, but this new look team should compete much better this year.
Seattle selects female Wemby out of France 2nd overall

Seattle selects Dominique Malonga with the 2nd pick in the 2025 draft.
They call her the female Wemby and it’s for a good reason. The 6-6 center out of France, Dominique Malonga, is going to be a problem for this league. She is just 19 years old and can dunk the ball with ease. Her wingspan and ability to move is very comparable to fellow Frenchmen, Victor Wembanyama.
Malonga comes out of Lyon in the ASVEL from France. She averaged 12 ppg, 9 rpg, and 1.5 bpg in the 23-24 season for the Tarbes Gespe Bigorre of the LFB. She was on loan from ASVEL until last year where she made her return. Malonga is the 1st Frenchwoman to dunk in an official game last year.
Seattle ended up with the 2nd pick from the trade with LA and Vegas that involved Jewell Loyd, but I think it paid off. The team is returning Sky Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike as well as Ezi Magbegor. Malonga will also play alongside French teammate Gabby Williams, who made her splash in the 2024 Olympic games.
Connecticut lands possibly the best sleeper pick of the draft

Aneesah Morrow takes her picture with the commissioner after being drafted by the Connecticut Sun.
I think this may be the drafts sleeper pick. The Connecticut Sun selected Aneesah Morrow out of LSU with the 7th pick of the draft. Morrow comes with some electric numbers to a team that needs all the help they can get now.
Morrow averaged 20.6 ppg and 12.4 rpg for LSU last season. She has the highest ppg average amongst all the draftees. Connecticut was able to land Morrow due to a pick they received from Phoenix in the Alyssa Thomas trade.
Connecticut really dismantled the team this offseason and is in a full rebuild. Veterans of the team Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner both left the team for other opportunities. They also lost DiJonai Carrington as well. Morrow will come into a team where she can find herself to be a key role player early on.
