Aryna Sabalenka
On the way to becoming and firmly establishing herself as world No. 1, Sabalenka has made the semifinals in nine of her last 11 Grand Slam appearances, winning three titles (2023 Australian Open, 2024 Australian Open, 2024 US Open).
Her quest for an Australian Open three-peat ended with a stunning loss to Madison Keys in this year’s final, but it has been a successful year for Sabalenka, who owns WTA 1000 titles in Miami and Madrid.
Can she cap this clay court swing with her fourth Grand Slam title? She has dropped only one set in the French Open, and she responded to that by bageling Swiatek in the third set in the semis.
Coco Gauff
Gauff, the No. 2 seed, has had a favorable draw, with Madison Keys the toughest opponent she has had to take on. But even when you have a favorable draw, you still have to beat who’s in front of you. She has done just that, and like Sabalenka, she has done it by dropping only one set. That was in the quarterfinals against Keys, and after losing the first set in a tight tiebreak, she dispatched her fellow American 6-4, 6-1 in the final two sets to move on.
The reward for following that up with a dominant victory over shock semifinalist Lois Boisson is a matchup with Sabalenka, who defeated her 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the final in Madrid last month.
