See Picks & Statistics For The GameWe’re back to action in the NHL and a packed 14 game slate to kick us off. This afternoon, we have a battle in the Metro Division between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins. These 2 last played a month ago and Washington won 4-1.
The Capitals have been playing great hockey. They’re 36-11-8 this season which has them in 1st place in the division. Coming into the break, they were 6-1-3 in their last 10 games. Washington is 19-7-2 on the road this season, so they’re comfortable regardless of where they are.
Alex Ovechkin is on the quest for the all-time goal record and can do it. He even broke his leg and came back in 4 weeks. Ovi has 26 goals in 39 games with 27 games to spare. He is 16 goals away from breaking the record, so it can definitely be done.
Their defense has also been very good this year, playing good two-way hockey. Washington ranks 3rd best for goals allowed and 11th best for shots on goal allowed per game. Goalie Logan Thompson is expected in net. He has a 24-2-5 record this year with a 2.93 GAA and .900 save percentage. Thompson has been one of the best goalies this year.
Pittsburgh needs to crank it into gear to hopefully gain a Wild Card spot

Penguins Sidney Crosby and Capitals Tom Wilson exchange pleasantries before puck drop.
Well, even though there’s one happy camper in Pittsburgh, this team has struggled this season. They’re 23-25-9 this season and 7th in the Metro division. Going into the break they were 4-5-1 in their last 10 games and had just lost to the Flyers.
Captain Sidney Crosby just lifted another trophy over his head for Team Canada in the 4 Nations Face Off. Sid the Kid can still hang, but he is getting up there in age. At 37, he is already a guaranteed Hall of Famer and possible Top 5 all time player.
Their offense has been going ok this year, ranking 18th in goals scored and 16th for shots on goal per game. Their power play is really good, ranking 7th best in the league. The team’s overall shooting percentage is at the bottom of the league though, so they need to clean that up.
Defensively is where all their problems are. They’re 3rd worst in goals allowed and 5th worst in shots on goal allowed per game. Their penalty kill isn’t terrible considering they commit 4 penalties per game.
Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic is expected in net. He’s 12-9-5 this season with a 2.93 GAA and a .900 save percentage. He better be ready to be worked for 60 minutes. Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins Prediction and Picks

Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and Rasmus Sandin celebrate together after scoring a goal.

Have to go with the Capitals here. Not only are they the better team, but they’re all completely rested as they didn’t send anyone to the 4 Nations tournament. These 2 are also rivals and things always get heated up between them.
I expect this game to almost be a blow out and end in regulation. Washington should get out to an early lead and not look back. Pittsburgh should struggle on defense right away with this high-powered Capitals offense.
I like Ovechkin to score a goal for +110. He’s scored in 6 out of his last 10 games vs the Penguins. He had just scored in his last 4 out of 5 games before the break as well. Pittsburgh ranks 3rd worst for goals allowed to forwards.
Another play I like this Pierre-Luc Dubois to record 2+ shots on goal for -135. It’s a little juicy but he hits at an 88% rate vs the Penguins. The Pens also rank 27th in the league for shots on goal allowed by forwards. Just 2 shots – get in and get out.
