We’re back and today we’re going to the Eastern Conference. The Washington Capitals will take on the Montreal Canadiens for Game 4 of their 1st round series. Washington currently leads the series 2-1 and will look to go back home with a commanding lead.

The Capitals surprised the whole league this season with their 51-22-9 record. Washington was riding the high of getting Ovechkin the all-time goal scoring title and they did just that. In the process, they shot to the top of the Metro Division and are on the hunt for a cup.

During the regular season, the Caps ranked 2nd in the league for goals scored per game. Although they ranked 22nd in shots on goal per game, they had the best shooting percentage in the league. Their power play was nowhere as good as their penalty kill.

John Carlson and co. held down the defense this year. They ranked 8th in goals allowed and 10th in shots on goal allowed per game. Unlike their power play, the Caps had the 4th best penalty kill in the league.

Goalie Logan Thompson returned in time for the playoffs and has started all 3 games. He was 31-6-6 this season with a 2.49 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Last games 6 goals allowed was very out of character for him.

Montreal stole the last playoff spot in the East this year. Their 40-31-11 record had them finishing 5th in the Atlantic Division. The Habs went on a run towards the end of the season and went 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.

This team totally came together on home ice in Game 3. They were much better at home this season vs the road with a 23-12-6 record at the Bell Centre. Being more comfortable at home is great, but not sustainable.

Montreal has a gritty group of guys who find ways to win. They almost won Game 1, but lost it in overtime, so they can compete here. Their defense has also shown they can hold this Capitals offense down. The Caps haven’t scored more than 3 goals in a game yet.

In net, we’re expected to see Jakub Dobes due to the injury sustained by Sam Montembeault. Dobes came in last game and finished it off to secure the win. He saved 7 out of 8 shots faced. Dobes was 7-4-3 this season with a 2.74 GAA and a .909 save percentage.

Even though the Habs crushed and stole Game 3, I think the Caps get right this game. They were pretty much embarrassed last game and cannot stand for that in the playoffs. Washington also needs to get a road win under their belt, and this is a perfect spot.

Washington needs to get that big offense going again. They were absolutely shut down last game with only 21 shots vs 40 shots. Their offense was really nowhere to be found, so adjustments will be made to correct that. I also expect them to shoot the puck more this game.

Guys like Connor McMichael and Alex Ovechkin continuing their play on offense necessary as they’ve been carrying the team. Both guys have 3 goals so far in the series. The Caps also need to not commit stupid penalties and make more of their power play opportunities.

Cole Caufield went absolutely nuclear last game with 11 shots on goal. He’s had 5 or more shots on goal in 2 of the games, where he also scored in those games. I like him to record 4 or more shots on goal for +125. The Habs need Caufield to stay involved and keep this offense moving, so he’ll be firing.
