It had to happen at some point, and it couldn’t have been on a worse day. But the NHL Best Bets article finally had a reverse sweep. Time to right the ship on this nice compact slate. Let’s smack some straight bets before the New Year! We are now a 17-19 record over the last 12 articles. Let’s bounce right back!
We will be breaking down NHL best bets here at Betting News all season! Each article will look for VALUE, as in straights you can take to build up your bankroll or pieces you can use to beef up your parlays. All bets will be -135 or better odds. And while we will focus on NHL player props, there are times we will take sides and totals. So keep your eyes peeled here as we will drop these throughout the week.
And if you haven’t already be sure to check out some of my favorite futures and awards. So time to lace them up and get ready to ride with Betzky for my favorite NHL best bets for 12/28/2024!
1. Tyler Toffoli o2.5 SOG -115 on BetOnline:
Not only has Tyler Toffoli been hot, but he gets a revenge spot tonight, making him one of my favorite player props of the night. Toffoli is starting to fit into what the Sharks are cooking. The journeyman has helped take the Sharks offense up a notch, along with youngsters like Celebrini and Eklund. But it’s Toffoli’s knack for flinging pucks that we will turn to tonight.
Toffoli has hit his 2.5 SOG (shots on goal) prop in 7 of the last 10 games. He has averaged 5.1 shot attempts in that span. Toffoli has always been a consistent SOG producer, but started off slow for the Sharks. Now he seems to have his footing and gets to play against his former team the Calagary Flames.
This matchup should be particularly good for Toffoli. He had 5 and 6 SOGs in the last two games he faced the Flames. And that was against tougher versions of the team. Now the Flames are allowing the 7th most shots against this season. A prime spot for Toffoli making it one of the NHL best bets tonight.

2. Mark Scheifele o1.5 Points +235 on BetOnline:
This one is a bit of a long shot but the value is there. Scheifele and Kyle Connor have been dominant this season, especially at home. Scheifele has a point in 81% of all home games this season and 69% of all games. Surprisingly neither have as many multi-point games as you would expect. Scheifele has only 12 multi-point games this season, an odd stat for one of the leagues top scorers.
However, tonight he is in a great spot to rack up multiple points. The Jets will host the Ottawa Senators. And while the Senators were starting to shut the door with goaltender Ullmark helping solidify their goaltending, he was recently injured. They will turn to young goaltender Mads Sogaard. In his lone start Sogaard gave up 6 goals and had a .765 save percentage.
While that is only a one game sample, the Jets offense will also get a spark from top 6 winger Ehlers who has dominated the Senators in the past. Scheifele also has a decent history against them with 7 points in his last 5 games. The Senators are also allowing more penalties on the road (the 11th most) which will allow Scheifele to have ample power play time. For nearly 2.5x your wager this play looks like an NHL best bet tonight.

3. Dylan Strome Assist +125 on BetOnline:
Alex Ovechkin will make his return from injury tonight and will once again set forth to set the all time goal record. He was on an absolute tear before a leg injury in mid November. In 18 games played he had 15 goals across 10 games. And many were assisted by his centerman Dylan Strome.
Strome has been slumping on the assist front once Ovechkin went out. Up until Ovechkin’s injury Strome had an assist in all but four game. He had 21 assists in 18 games. Since then he has only 5 assists. Clearly Ovechkin helped prop him up. And we are getting a tremendous price on his assist because of this slump.
Tonight the Capitals will get the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs will be without top center Auston Matthews and are coming off a win last night in Detroit. They will start their third string goaltender Matt Murray tonight. In his single start this season Murray allowed three goals with a .889 save percentage. This is a great spot for Strome and Ovechkin to get rolling again making his assist an NHL best bet at +115.
