Edmonton Oilers vs. Dallas Stars: NHL Best Bets (5/23)

Game 2 is tonight in Texas as the Dallas Stars host the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Western Conference Finals. The Stars successfully stayed rock solid at home in Game 1, as they rallied for a massive third period to take down Edmonton. The Oilers actually led the first meeting 1-0 after 10 minutes of play, but the Stars netted an equalizer before the intermission.

However, Edmonton found two more goals in the second period and extended their lead to 3-1, looking to sneak away with a win. But then, things got crazy. The Stars scored a power play goal just 32 seconds into the period, another PP goal less than four minutes later, and found a third less than six minutes into the final frame. Three straight power play goals lifted the Stars to a 4-3 lead. That held until Tyler Seguin found his second of the game to give the Stars a two goal cushion.

Finally, Dallas found the empty net to seal the win. They’ve now won seven straight at home during the postseason. Do they keep it up tonight? Or can Edmonton rally to tie up this series?

The Stars did a fantastic job of limiting the Oilers’ chances last matchup and containing their attack. Edmonton only managed 27 shots on goal and only scored on one of their three power play opportunities. Jake Oettinger stood tall between the posts, and the Stars walked away with a very dominant win.

The question will be, can they keep that up for Game 2? They are 7-1 at home this postseason, only losing the very opening contest to Colorado. Dallas took full advantage of their power plays last game, and also blocked 17 shots defensively. They are very deep, have revenge on their mind from last season, and tonight I see them handling business once again.

However, I will be taking a different approach betting this contest.

Oilers vs. Stars Prediction: Stars Win, Under 6.5

Get ready for a sweat. I don’t love betting on Oilers’ unders, especially in a spot where they should come out incredibly aggressive. However, the Stars have proven to be able to limit their opponent’s chances, especially at home during the playoffs. I don’t see anything different happening tonight.

Obviously the Oilers will come out screaming, trying to fire as many pucks on net as they can. But they only put up 27 last game, and only three slipped past Oettinger. It’s going to take 32+ shots from Edmonton to win a game like this, but I see Dallas containing them to under this number. Oettinger has been phenomenal, and is playing as good as any tender this postseason.

Stuart Skinner has not. However, he has to improve. Plain and simple, its hard for him to play any worse. I am betting on Skinner improving overall, Oettinger continuing to be a brick wall in net, and the Stars to control this hockey game from start to finish. At home, the Stars will dictate the pace, defend when they need to, and look to keep this as low scoring as possible.
