See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Western Conference Finals begin tonight as the Dallas Stars host the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1. This is a rematch of last season’s conference finals, and it’s actually the third straight year for the Stars. However, they have yet to get over the hump. Dallas lost to eventual Stanley Cup Champions, the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023, and lost to Edmonton last season.
Most recently, the Stars made the Stanley Cup Finals in 2020 where they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and have not lifted it since 1999. The Oilers are looking to make their second straight Stanley Cup Finals, after losing to Florida in seven games last season. Prior to that, the Oilers had not seen the SCF since they lost to the Hurricanes in 2006, and haven’t won since 1990. No matter who Edmonton plays in the Finals (if they get there), they’ll have revenge on their mind.
However, they first must get by a tough team from Dallas who is playing phenomenal hockey at the moment. Can the Oilers rally to take down the Stars in this series, and in Game 1 tonight on the road?

These teams met three times during the regular season, alternating wins each time. The Stars took down the Oilers in Dallas back in October by a score of 4-1. Edmonton had to wait until March to get their revenge, but they were successful, beating Dallas at home 5-4. However, the Stars got the last laugh later that month, taking down the Oilers on the road, 4-3.
Tonight we are back in Dallas for Game 1. The Stars are a ridiculous 6-1 at home during this postseason, while Edmonton sits at 4-2 on the road. Dallas lost to Colorado at home to open the playoffs, but have been perfect since. The Oilers lost the first two of the NHL playoffs in Los Angeles to the Kings, but since beat them and the Golden Knights three times on the road. Can they find another win away from home tonight against the Stars?
We’ve seen plenty of goals between both teams when they faced off, but will that continue in Game 1?

Stuart Skinner likely gets the nod for Edmonton tonight. That’s scary. Sure, the man is coming off two straight shutouts, but he only saw 23.5 SOGs per game in those contests. The Oilers as a team have had three extra days of rest compared to the Stars, so it will be interesting to see if that comes into play in this matchup (It did NOT help the Hurricanes last night). Ultimately, I am putting my faith in Jake Oettinger and the Dallas Stars’ defense.
They are coming off a series against the Jets. Winnipeg isn’t the most aggressive offensive team, and thus, the Stars did not have to shoot too often to win. Things will change against the Oilers. Edmonton is going to speed this game up, play very aggressive and pepper the net as much as possible. But, Dallas saw this style of play against Colorado in the first round.
The Jets totaled 30+ SOGs in half their games against the Stars, while the Avs did so in 3/7 contests. If the Stars are able to contain the Oilers, get their bodies in front of the puck and make sure Oettinger has an easy night, they’ll sneak enough past Skinner to win this game. I am betting on the Stars defense showing out tonight, and limiting Edmonton’s offensive chances.
Give me the Stars to get the job done at home, but I have a feeling the Oilers get the last laugh in this series.
