Avalanche vs Hurricanes NHL Predictions & Picks (12/5)
The Hurricanes might be the betting favorites tonight but it sure doesn’t feel like it based on how they’ve been playing.
After a strong start to the 2024-25 campaign, the Hurricanes are only 2-5 SU in their last seven games which includes losses in each of their last three outings. Carolina’s latest defeat came in the form of a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday, meaning the former has now been outscored 16-5 on aggregate amid its three-game slide.
The Avalanche haven’t exactly been perfect as of late either, picking up three losses in their last five games. Having said that, the Avs did notch a 5-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres two nights ago, which is made more impressive by the fact that Colorado had to come back from a 4-0 deficit to earn the victory.
The comeback performance was led by Nathan MacKinnon, who tallied three points (2 G, 1 A) — including the game-tying goal.
The Avalanche couldn’t have defeated the Sabres on Tuesday without Nathan MacKinnon’s help.
Even though the Avalanche’s offense has been all over the place lately, their situation could improve tonight. The Hurricanes have been bleeding goals amid their slump, surrendering at least four in six of their last seven games.
In other words, Carolina wouldn’t mind if Pyotr Kochetkov had a strong performance in goal tonight. The Russian netminder struggled as he returned from injury on Tuesday, allowing four goals on 28 shots — good for a .857 save percentage.
Kochetkov has also had minimal success against the Avalanche in his career, going 1-1-0 with a .822 SV% and 4.97 goals-against average in two previous meetings.
After Alexandar Georgiev allowed four goals on eight shots to the Sabres, the Avs will likely roll with Scott Wedgewood tonight. The newly acquired goaltender played well in relief for Georgiev, stopping all 22 shots he faced to lead Colorado to a comeback win.
Avalanche G Alexandar Georgiev was outplayed by backup Scott Wedgewood on Tuesday.
While the odds favor the Hurricanes, I predict that the Avalanche will pull off an upset. Neither side has been lighting up the world, but the Avalanche have more recent success than the Hurricanes, who have allowed four-plus goals in three consecutive outings. It’ll likely be a messy back-and-forth affair with Colorado finding a way to squeak out victorious.
For the best bet, I suggest the Over on the 6.5-goal total. Both clubs have recently found themselves in high-scoring affairs as the Avalanche’s last six games averaged 7.5 total goals while the Hurricanes saw an average of 7.7 combined goals scored in their six previous outings.
With Colorado and Carolina both struggling to play consistent defense, we could see a lot of goals tonight.

Best Avalanche vs Hurricanes NHL Player Prop (12/5)
If you’re looking for an Avalanche vs. Hurricanes player prop bet, you might want to consider adding Valeri Nicushkin o0.5 points (-130) to your slip.
It took Nichushkin some time to get things rolling after a delayed start to the season, but he’s finally hit his stride. The veteran forward now has six points in his last six outings, only going pointless twice during that stretch. Five of those points came in his last four road games, showing that the 29-year-old winger is comfortable with playing in enemy territory.
Nicushkin also has a decent amount of success against the Hurricanes, registering one goal and seven assists in eight career meetings with the franchise. After tallying at least one point in each of his last two games against Carolina, I see Nicushkin hitting the Over again tonight.
Best Avalanche vs. Hurricanes Player Prop Bet: Valeri Nichushkin o0.5 Points (-130)
