Two years ago, the two teams took part in a thriller at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with the Chiefs pulling out a 38-35 win on Harrison Butker’s 27-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining.
This year, the two teams will tangle on Sunday, February 9 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, where the Chiefs will be aiming to become the first team in Super Bowl history to win three consecutive championships. That has been the most untouchable of Super Bowl records, but after becoming the first team to reach the Super Bowl in three consecutive years, the Chiefs are at the doorstep with one foot inside.

Chiefs Hold as Spread Favorites as Kickoff Draws Closer
After Philadelphia and Kansas City booked their tickets to the Big Easy, top online sportsbooks released their spread odds and other odds for the big game.
Two years ago, the Eagles were favored by a small margin, but this time around, the Chiefs opened with a slight edge.
But that edge has narrowed as Sunday approaches. Kansas City has been at -1.5 and -2 at various points since odds were released, but they are now favored by a single point at top Super Bowl betting sites.

Will the AFC Champion Be Favored in the Big Game for the First Time Since 2021?
The Chiefs have opened as favorites to make history, but in each of the last three years, the NFC champion has been the Super Bowl betting favorite.
The last time that the AFC champs were favored in the title tilt was four years ago, when the Chiefs were favored over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers even though the Bucs were playing in their home stadium.
The Chiefs failed to cover in that instance, as the Bucs dominated in a 31-9 victory at Raymond James Stadium. But the AFC is 3-1 SU and ATS the last four times as the Super Bowl spread favorite, and if the Chiefs can make it four in five, they will make history.

Did the Favored 49ers Cover Last Year?
After a scoreless first quarter, the wait to find out the outcome of Super Bowl first score odds ended seconds into the second quarter, as the 49ers took a 3-0 lead on a 55-yard field goal by Jake Moody. It set a record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history until Butker broke it in the third quarter with a 57-yarder.
Moody booted two more field goals in the game, one to put San Francisco ahead 19-16 with 1:53 left in regulation and another one to put the Niners up 22-19 in overtime.
But a missed extra point following a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter proved to be crucial, and the Chiefs would prevail 25-22 in overtime on Mecole Hardman’s championship-clinching touchdown catch.
Because the 49ers lost outright, they did not cover the spread in Super Bowl 58.

To date, only one Super Bowl matchup has closed as a pick’em. That occurred in Super Bowl XLVIII between the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.
And the game memorably came down to the waning moments, with the Patriots holding on for a 28-24 win when the Seahawks inexplicably threw the ball at the 1 instead of opting to hand the ball to Marshawn Lynch.
In the other 57 Super Bowls, favorites have a substantial edge in terms of Super Bowl moneyline wins. However, there is much less of a gap against the spread.

According to Super Bowl 59 score predictions, NFL betting experts are backing the Eagles to spoil the Chiefs’ quest for a historic three-peat. No matter the outcome, it likely won’t be the last game for Chiefs tight end and Super Bowl MVP contender Travis Kelce, despite Kelce retirement speculation being a hot topic ahead of Sunday’s game.

As noted, the 49ers did not cover when favored in last year’s Super Bowl.
2023 (SBLVII) – Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Spread: Eagles -1.5
Final Score: Chiefs 38, Eagles 35
Super Bowl LVII Point Spread Result: Chiefs +1.5
As mentioned above, the Eagles did not cover the spread in the previous matchup between Philadelphia and Kansas City.
2022 (SBLVI) – Los Angeles Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Spread: Rams -4.5
Final Score: Rams 23, Bengals 20
Super Bowl LVI Point Spread Result: Bengals +4.5
The Rams took a 13-3 lead early in the second quarter, but the Bengals scored 17 straight points across the second and third quarters to take a 20-13 lead. The Rams came back to win the title in their home stadium, scoring the decisive touchdown with 1:25 left in the game. However, they did not cover the point spread.
2021 (SBLV) – Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Spread: Chiefs -3
Final Score: Bucs 31, Chiefs 9
Super Bowl LV Point Spread Result: Bucs +3
Kansas City, who was seeking back-to-back Super Bowl wins, was favored at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. But the Bucs shut down Patrick Mahomes and dominated to make Super Bowl history.
The result of the big game wasn’t the only underdog win in Tampa. In a Super Bowl Gatorade color upset, blue Gatorade got the honor of drenching Bucs coach Bruce Arians for the celebratory shower.
2020 (SBLIV) – San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Spread: Chiefs -1
Final Score: Chiefs 31, 49ers 20
Super Bowl LIV Point Spread Result: Chiefs -1
Playing in their first Super Bowl in 50 years, the odds were slightly in Kansas City’s favor. But the 49ers were bound for their first title in 25 years until the Chiefs scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to overturn a 20-10 deficit.
Mahomes threw two interceptions but received Super Bowl MVP honors after leading the fourth-quarter rally.

If either the Chiefs or Eagles close as a favorite of three or fewer points, it will be the 19th time in Super Bowl history that a team has been favored by three or fewer points. In that scenario, spread favorites are 10-8 SU and ATS all time.
However, the last three such favorites have failed to win. The 49ers lost to the Chiefs last year, the Eagles lost to the Chiefs in their previous matchup two years ago, and the Chiefs went down to the Bucs three years ago.
Teams that have been favored by two or fewer points are 3-3 SU and ATS all time. However, it is worth noting that teams favored by exactly one point are 2-0 SU and ATS, as one-point favorites won in Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl XVI.
