Super Bowl 59 Opening Night is in the books, and the top stars of the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles were on hand to answer questions from various pundits and media personnel.
Unsurprisingly, Kansas City Chief’s tight end Travis Kelce was on hand to field an assortment of questions. This was his fifth Super Bowl Opening Night event in New Orleans, and this year saw him discuss his NFL future among other things.
Travis Kelce Talks About His Future After Super Bowl 59
Questions about Travis Kelce’s future or potential retirement was a hot topic during the Super Bowl Opening Night. The 35-year old tight end has had quite a Hall of Fame-worthy career, and once Sunday’s Big Game is over, he’ll be finishing up his 12th season; some Super Bowl betting sites are having prop bets on whether he’ll call it a career after this year’s Super Bowl.
When asked where he sees himself in three years, the seven-time All-Pro responded that all indications were that he still has something left in the tank,
“Where will I be in three years? I don’t know, hopefully still playing football. I love doing this, I love coming to work everyday. I feel like I still got a lot of good football left in me,” Kelce said.
Outside the gridiron, Kelce has been involved in various ventures such as being part of a successful podcast with his brother, Jason Kelce, on top of multiple film appearances and opportunities. While Kelce stated he plans to keep playing, he also acknowledged how he’s been preparing for life after football.
“I know I’ve been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That’s always been the goal, knowing that football only lasts for so long. You gotta find a way to get into another career, another profession. I’ve been doing that in my offseasons, but for the most part, I plan on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football.”
Addressing Whether the Referees Favoring the Chiefs or Not
One of the hot topics Kelce commented on was regarding the narrative that the media has been propagating that the referees are favoring the Chiefs leading into the Big Game.
“Why are you guys leaning into this whole ref thing? Why are you guys leaning into it?” Kelce remarked when asked about the potential rigging job referees were doing to let the Chiefs win their games.
Most critics pointed out that some questionable calls were apparent during the Chiefs’ current playoff run. This included the Chiefs’ divisional-round game against the Houston Texans, where Houston was flagged for eight penalties totaling 82 yards.
One of those calls involved a roughing-the-passer on Will Anderson Jr., and another incident where linebacker Henry To’oTo’o was called with an unnecessary roughness flag on a play where he didn’t even sack nor hit Patrick Mahomes.
Then there was the AFC Championship. Opponents of the Chiefs during their playoff games were hit with 14 penalties for 130 yards, while Kansas City racked up only 50 yards. During their game against the Buffalo Bills, quarterback Josh Allen seemingly converted a critical fourth-and-1, but the referees waived it off.
This ruling gave the Chiefs momentum that proved insurmountable as they nabbed the championship. Most bettors are keeping this in mind as they place their respective wagers on player and team stats of both teams heading towards Super Bowl 59 on their preferred football betting sites.
Meanwhile, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also dismissed the referee favoritism claims in his state of the league address on Monday, calling it a “ridiculous theory,” and doubled down on the league’s trust in its officials.
Chiefs versus Eagles Part 2
Amid all the media chatter, this upcoming Super Bowl 59 showdown is set to be an exciting one. The Chiefs and Eagles have met on the grandest stage before, back in Super Bowl 57, where the Chiefs emerged victorious, 38-35.
Their second encounter will be a highly anticipated match, with bettors wagering on both team’s performance. Kelce has been dismissive of the referee favoritism, and would rather let his team’s play and the scoreboard do the talking.
