The SMU Mustangs and Virginia Tech Hokies go head to head on Wednesday Night in this ACC Showdown. SMU is on a three game winning streak and sit at 8-3 in the conference. They’ve actually won 6 of their last 7 games, only dropping one to Louisville at home. However, they’ve hit some stride since then and face an inferior opponent.
Virginia Tech is also on a two game winning streak of their own, and they are coming off their own Super Bowl win. On Saturday, they upset their rival Virginia on the road by one as four point underdogs. Now they find themselves as 5.5 point dogs at home, with a tougher opponent ahead.
Can they pull out this win at home? Or will the Mustangs keep cruising to another victory?

Hokies Host Mustangs at Home

Tobi Lawal leads Virginia Tech in points and rebounds this year
Like I said, the Hokies are coming off a huge win. They’ve also got a trip to South Bend to take on the Irish this Saturday, and this year they really haven’t shown up against good teams.
Virginia Tech is just 2-11 against Top 100 teams this year, but they have won their last two, beating Florida State and Virginia on the road. The Hokies typically like to play slower, but they are still 319th in turnovers and 296th in eFG Defense at home. Against a team like SMU, I could see Virginia Tech getting caught sleeping. They are coming off a couple big wins and have a road trip in a few days. Quite the sandwich spot if you ask me.
SMU plays much faster, ranking 53rd in possessions per game. On the road they are still a Top 60 offense and a Top 40 defense. They also rank 26th in eFG Offense and 13th on defense. SMU takes care of the basketball very well and are a Top 30 offensive rebounding team as well. While they didn’t really compete against Louisville or Duke, both of those teams are lightyears ahead of the Hokies. SMU is the much better team here, and we will be backing them to continue winning.

We are not overthinking this and backing the better team. Offensively, SMU is faster, they shoot better, and they take much better care of the basketball. Defensively, they contest shots, get in your grill, and make opponent’s lives difficult. Even on the road, I trust them to ride the momentum they’ve built into this contest and take down the Hokies on the road.
While Virginia Tech has been playing better basketball recently, I love this spot for SMU. Va Tech is coming off two upset wins, beating Virginia as a 4 point underdog, and Florida State as an 11 point underdog. These are their only two against Top 100 teams, and SMU has proven they can win on the road in dominant fashion. The Hokies give up tons of offensive rebounds and are 0-3 against Top 50 teams this season.
SMU’s next game is against Pittsburgh, who is a very good team. But it’s not on Saturday, they host them next Tuesday. The Mustangs will have a full six days off before their next game, so their full focus should be on taking down the Hokies on the road before a much deserved break.
