See Picks & Statistics For The GameDePaul basketball has been a perennial underdog in the Big East, carrying the weight of a 32-game conference losing streak into this season. However, early signs suggest this year’s squad is different, showing resilience and grit even in tough matchups like their recent battle against Texas Tech. As they prepare to face Providence on Tuesday, the Blue Demons have a chance to prove that a new era might be underway.

Providence vs DePaul Predictions
Full disclaimer: as a two-time DePaul graduate, there will be limited bias in this piece. That said, I assure you, the reader, that I aim to keep my perspective as objective as possible. However, it’s time to give respect where it’s due to one of the Big East’s perennial underdogs. For over a decade, DePaul has been the league’s punchline, but this Blue Demons squad is showing they are cut from a different cloth.
Take their recent matchup in Lubbock against Texas Tech. After a disastrous start—going scoreless for almost six minutes and falling behind 14-0—this team showed resilience. In years past, a DePaul team in this position would have crumbled and lost by 30+. Not this squad. They clawed their way back into the game, even briefly taking the lead in the first half. That fight, even in a double-digit loss, spoke volumes about how different this team is. With nearly a week to regroup, the Blue Demons should be rested and ready for their first Big East test of the season.
Rest vs Rust
The Providence Friars enter Tuesday’s game with a 6-4 record. They’ve been battle-tested early, facing four teams ranked in the top 150, including two in the top 40. However, the Friars have struggled mightily on the road, going 0-4 in road/neutral games. Their top-60 home defense plummets to 245th in adjusted defensive efficiency when away from their home court. Following a road loss to Rhode Island on Saturday, Providence faces a quick turnaround to play in Chicago just three days later. While the Rhode Island trip isn’t an arduous journey, back-to-back road games could pose a challenge for the Friars.
Meanwhile, DePaul is looking to snap a 32-game Big East losing streak. The Blue Demons are slight favorites heading into this game, and for good reason. Playing in Chicago—where they’ve already competed in seven games this season—they’re comfortable in their home gym. DePaul boasts impressive rankings: top 75 in adjusted offensive efficiency (60th), three-point percentage (39th), two-point offense (62nd) and defense (56th), and effective field goal offense (25th) and defense (42nd). They’re also one of the most three-point-reliant teams in the country, ranking sixth in three-point attempts. That bodes well against a Providence team that drops to 313th in three-point defense on the road.
DePaul’s Keys To Success
Though DePaul lacks a traditional home-court advantage due to sparse turnouts, they could still disrupt Providence’s rhythm by pushing the pace. The Blue Demons run a much faster tempo than the Friars, who are one of the slowest teams in the country (ranked seventh in pace per Bart Torvik). If DePaul can force a quicker game and maintain their offensive efficiency, they have a strong chance to secure their first conference win since March 8, 2023.
This game feels like it holds more weight for DePaul than it does for Providence. With a new coach, a fresh culture, and the potential to set a new tone, the Blue Demons are poised to make a statement.
I’m taking DePaul to win.
