Two Teams, Two Slumps, One Late-Night Showdown
The Oregon Ducks host the Northwestern Wildcats tonight, both teams looking to snap out of their rough patches. Oregon is riding a five-game losing streak dating back to January 21st, while Northwestern has dropped four of its last five. The Wildcats enter as nearly double-digit underdogs in the second game of their West Coast road trip. But we are not concerned with picking a side here—the total has been calling our names all morning.
The home team often dictates the pace, and Oregon will do just that tonight as they aim to get back in the win column. The Ducks run at a top-100 pace, per Haslametrics, and will force Northwestern to play their style of basketball. That should not be an issue for the Wildcats, who have adjusted well on the road all season. While they rank 327th in tempo at home, they speed things up in true road games, climbing to 253rd.
Defensively, Northwestern has been below average all season. They struggle with foul trouble, ranking 15th worst in free throw rate defense, and are poor at protecting the paint (16th worst). Their effective field goal percentage defense sits at 291st nationally. Offensively, however, the Wildcats have been solid—12th in free throw percentage, 82nd in adjusted offensive efficiency, and 93rd in two-point offense.
Oregon counters with a top-75 offense that is efficient inside and ranks in the top 50 in free throw percentage. However, the Ducks have had trouble defending the perimeter against top-100 teams, ranking 201st in that category.
If Oregon can control the tempo and create enough possessions for both teams to push past 70 points, we should be in a good spot. And just to sweeten the deal, I have some delectable trends to share with you.
Trends
Northwestern Trends:
- Northwestern has the third-highest over percentage in conference play nationwide at 12-1 (92.3%).
- The Wildcats have hit the over in 13 straight games, with their last under coming on December 15 against Georgia Tech.
- On the road against top 50 teams, Northwestern games are 4-0 to the over.
- The average total for their conference games is 142.1 points.
- Northwestern is 2-0 to the over on the second game of a road trip.
Oregon Trends:
- Oregon games have gone over in five of their last six matchups.
- When coming off a loss, the Ducks are 6-1 to the over.
- As a favorite this season, Oregon games have gone over in 11 of 18 contests.
- In conference play, Oregon has hit the over in 9 of 13 games.
All these stats, just for the game to go under? Maybe. But I still like the over, no matter how “due” an under might feel.
