Coming off their Super Bowl, the Clemson Tigers took down No. 2 Duke on Saturday, 77-71, at home. The Tiger faithful stormed the court in typical upset fashion. However, storming always comes with a price. I live by a code—that code states that if a school storms the field or court, they must be faded in their following game. Tonight, the play is backing the North Carolina Tar Heels, who are coming off a close win over Pitt at home on Saturday.
Rise to the Challenge on the Road
On the road this season, the Tar Heels have excelled on both ends, ranked 44th in offense and 75th in defense. They are strong at defending the perimeter, scoring inside, making free throws, and blocking shots—ranking in the top 55 in all four categories. North Carolina is 0-4 against top 50 schools this season, maintaining a top 55 offense, but their defense dips, ranked 164th in adjusted defensive efficiency. They have struggled to force turnovers. However, they are excellent at rebounding, ranked 27th per Bart Torvik. Their four losses came against Kansas, Louisville, Pitt, and Duke. Now they face a Clemson Tigers team fresh off their biggest win of the season just two days ago. The quick turnaround gives North Carolina a great chance to secure their first road win against a top 50 school.
The Tigers will try to force a slower-paced game, while the Tar Heels will look to speed things up. North Carolina is 35th in tempo, while Clemson ranks as the 16th slowest team in the country, per Haslametrics. If the Tar Heels can force the Tigers to play at their pace, they will stay in this game. Winning the rebound battle will also be critical, as Clemson is ranked 90th in offensive rebounding. Stopping the Tigers from capitalizing on second-chance points will be another key for North Carolina.
It is a system play Monday: fade the team coming off their biggest win of the season. Lean into the idea that they are still hungover from celebrating just two short days ago. Take a team that needs to find its footing and secure some big wins. North Carolina will not be looking ahead to Saturday, when they play at Syracuse. They need this game. Give me the Tar Heels with the points.
Best Bet: North Carolina +6 (-112) on BetOnline
