Two Big 12 teams are coming off their biggest wins of the season. Baylor stormed back from 21 down to hand No. 16 Kansas their biggest blown lead in program history, taking them down 81-70 in one of the wildest games of the weekend. Meanwhile, Texas Tech pulled off a stunning 82-81 upset over No. 5 Houston as nearly ten-point underdogs. On top of that, the Red Raiders are riding a six-game winning streak. With both teams coming off massive wins, this matchup has under written all over it.
Baylor vs. Texas Tech: A Defensive Showdown
The tempo of this game is going to be as slow as the week leading up to a vacation. Both teams rank in the upper 200s and low 300s in pace. On the road, Baylor plays at the 11th slowest pace in the country. Meanwhile, Texas Tech likes to speed it up at home but still only sits at 226th in tempo.
The toll of these huge wins should lead to a sloppier offensive game, especially with both teams ranking in the top 75 in defense. At home, Texas Tech has held three of five conference opponents under 60 points this season. They have been lights out defensively and should be able to slow down a Baylor offense fresh off the win of a record setting victory.
Baylor is also the fourth-worst team away from home, per Haslametrics. Meanwhile, Texas Tech ranks 93rd best at home. In ten road games, Baylor’s offense has been mediocre—still 19th in adjusted offensive efficiency but just 205th in two-point scoring. They are also 20th worst in offensive block percentage and hitting free throws at just 69%.
As incredible as these teams were on Saturday, do not expect the same offensive fireworks tonight. Texas Tech has a massive showdown with Arizona in Tucson on Saturday. Baylor hosts UCF but cannot afford to look ahead. Expect both defenses to show up and show out. NO POINTS!
