Sunday evening, social media exploded after news broke that the Kansas City Royals have finally called up their star prospect, Jac Caglianone. The No. 10 prospect in all of baseball was hitting .322 with a .389 OBP and .593 SLG, along with 15 home runs and 56 RBI in just 50 games between Double-A and Triple-A. It still baffles me that he started the season in Double-A—why?
In under a month at Triple-A, he hit .326 with six home runs and 13 RBI—in just 11 games. The kid is the real deal. The Royals need power desperately, sitting dead last in Major League Baseball in home runs—nine behind the Pirates, who rank second to last.
Is There Value in Jac Caglianone?
There is still value out there for the highly-touted prospect. That said, a lot of the early value is gone. I am holding a 60/1 ticket on Caglianone to win the award. His current odds now sit between 8/1 and 12/1.
With the Athletics’ Jacob Wilson already logging 28 games while slashing .357 with a .900 OPS and 19 extra-base hits, Caglianone has ground to make up.
But it is only June 2. There is plenty of time for someone like Wilson or even Jasson Dominguez to hit a slump, opening the door for Caglianone to climb into the Rookie of the Year conversation. Clearly, the books respect him already—he has not played a single MLB game and he is sitting third on the odds board.
