The Arizona Diamondbacks enter the 2025 season with hopes of building on a solid 89-win campaign that narrowly missed the playoffs. Key offseason moves, including the signing of Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes and slugger Josh Naylor, have bolstered their pitching staff and offense. With a revamped roster and a competitive NL West ahead, the Diamondbacks aim to make a strong push for the postseason.

Entering the 2025 season, the Arizona Diamondbacks have made some strong additions to their roster. They signed Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, who posted a 2.92 ERA with a 15-9 record in 2024 with the Baltimore Orioles. The four-time All-Star was the ideal addition to Arizona’s starting rotation, which struggled significantly a year ago, allowing nearly three runs per game in the first five innings, ranking fifth worst in the league. The projected starting rotation for Arizona is Burnes, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandon Pfaadt, and Jordan Montgomery. If healthy, this could be a much stronger rotation than the one they had a year ago.
On the offensive side, their most notable addition is former Guardians slugger Josh Naylor, who batted .243 with an OPS of .776, while hitting 31 home runs. Naylor is a great addition for the Diamondbacks, but they lost significant offensive power, including Christian Walker, who Naylor will replace at first base, along with Joc Pederson and Josh Bell. Those are three powerful bats the Diamondbacks lost to free agency. Their projected lineup for 2025 is Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, Naylor, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jake McCarthy, Eugenio Suarez, Pavin Smith, Gabriel Moreno, and Geraldo Perdomo.
Is this lineup better than the one from last year when they led the league in scoring with 5.47 runs per game, won 89 games, and still missed the playoffs? No. However, with the addition of Burnes, I believe this team can still win 86 games in 2025. If the rotation is significantly more effective than it was a year ago, this team has the potential to make some noise.
Hopefully, the first half of the season is kind to the Diamondbacks, so they are buyers at the trade deadline instead of sellers.
Future Leans & Bets
With how many strong bats this team lost in the offseason, I am more hesitant to make any definitive calls on Arizona’s chances to make or miss the playoffs. However, I do like them to secure at least 86 wins this season. Even with the challenge of facing the Dodgers in their division, there will still be plenty of opportunities for Arizona to carve out wins in the NL West.
