Residents in Missouri will get to experience online sports betting within their state by the end of this year. According to reports, the Missouri Gaming Commission has confirmed that December 1, 2025 will be the launch date.
Most online sports betting operators have been waiting for the local government to establish the availability of online sportsbooks within the state.
How Will Online Sports Betting Start in Missouri?
The state’s 13 operating casinos will be allowed a sports betting license, including Missouri’s six professional sports teams. This includes the Kansas City Chiefs and the St. Louis Cardinals. The last two online betting licenses, not tied to any teams or casinos, will be granted through a competitive selection process.
Moreover, the state’s 13 casinos and six professional sports teams are also permitted a retail online sportsbook to operate. Retail sports betting licenses will cost $250,000 and online sports betting licenses will be $500,000.
Reports also stated that the application period for all licenses opened May 15, 2025. Meanwhile, the two available Direct Mobile Licenses applications are due by July 15, 2025.
Applicants for Direct Mobile Licenses will be able to present before the Commission on August 13, 2025. Additional details on the process to be released later by the state regulator. The Commission will reveal the two chosen applicants for the available Direct Mobile Licenses on August 15, 2025.
To offer sports betting starting December 1, all other retail and mobile license applicants must submit a completed application by September 12.
The commission plans to collaborate with stakeholders to release license applications on May 15, allowing interested parties to begin collecting the required documents.
Will Online Casinos be Next?
With online sports betting slowly but surely becoming a reality in the Show-Me State, what about the best online casinos? Given how long it took for Missouri lawmakers to green-light online sports betting, online casinos might take twice as long.
One of the main hindrances to iGaming in Missouri would be the state’s retail casinos. Most retail casino operators are apprehensive about iGaming’s impact on their revenue more so than online sports betting.
The vote that passed online sports betting in Missouri had a narrow margin during the referendum. With this, it might take online casinos even longer to legally operate within the state.
However, Missouri could follow Michigan and Pennsylvania’s steps to legalize and offer the full range of iGaming options. This, combined with thorough feasibility studies, could significantly guide the state toward becoming one of the top online casino destinations in the U.S.
