Steve Asmussen, a name synonymous with success in horse racing, continues to solidify his reputation as one of the sport’s premier trainers. With over 10,500 career wins, Asmussen stands as North America’s all-time leading trainer, a testament to his dedication and expertise.
Despite his extensive accolades, the Kentucky Derby has remained elusive for Asmussen. He has come close, finishing second with Nehro in 2011, Lookin At Lee in 2017, and Epicenter in 2022. He also experienced a third-place finish with Curlin in 2007. However, the coveted victory has yet to be achieved – Asmussen currently has a 0-26 record in the Kentucky Derby.
Asmussen’s Two Horses Are Ready for This Year’s Kentucky Derby
This year, Steve Asmussen enters Kentucky Derby 2025 with renewed hope. He has two promising entrants: Publisher and Tiztastic.
Publisher is an intriguing longshot in the 2025 Kentucky Derby. A son of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Publisher has yet to secure a victory in seven starts. However, Publisher has consistently placed in races he participated in, earning over $400,000 in earnings. His most notable performance came in the Arkansas Derby – he finished second with a career-best Equibase speed figure of 100.
Asmussen, aiming to end his Derby drought, sees potential in Publisher, noting, “Maybe both of us can break our maiden”. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and Publisher will attempt to become the first maiden to win the Kentucky Derby. Brokers Tip was the first one to do so back in 1933.
Meanwhile, Tiztastic, another of Steve Asmussen’s trainees, has shown significant improvement this season. After a series of competitive finishes, he won in the Louisiana Derby, marking a significant milestone in his career. Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds and partners, Tiztastic’s recent form has positioned him as a strong contender for the Kentucky Derby.
Both have shown potential in their respective preparatory races, earning points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Will 2025 be Steve Asmussen’s Year in the Kentucky Derby?
Steve Asmussen’s consistent performance during the horse racing season further underscores his status as a top trainer. In 2024, he tied with Brad Cox for the most Kentucky racing wins, securing 96 victories across the state’s tracks. His dominance in the sport is evident, and the 2025 Kentucky Derby could be the pinnacle of his career.
As the 151st Kentucky Derby approaches, all eyes will be on Steve Asmussen and his contenders. With a legacy built on excellence, he may finally capture the elusive victory that has long awaited him.
